More info
This Chinese company, which deals with selling affordable clothing and fashion accessories, has gained popularity among young customers worldwide, mainly due to its aggressive marketing, low prices, and wide range of products.
The Rise of Shein: From Local Brand to Global Phenomenon
Shein was founded in 2008 in China under the original name Sheinside. Initially, the brand focused mainly on selling wedding dresses and women's clothing. However, it wasn't until later, in 2015, that a rebranding occurred, and the company was renamed Shein. This step significantly contributed to the expansion of their range and the increase in popularity, gradually becoming an internationally known fashion platform. Today, Shein offers not only women's clothing but also fashion for men, children, accessories, shoes, and even home products.
How Does Shein Work?
Shein is a typical example of an online-only fashion retailer, operating exclusively through the internet. Unlike traditional manufacturing processes, which can take several months, Shein uses an innovative approach to design and production. The key to their success is the ability to quickly respond to fashion trends, making them attractive to customers who are constantly looking for new, trendy pieces.
Although it might seem that Shein operates on a so-called on-demand system (production after order), they actually produce products in advance. Shein analyzes social media, monitors consumer behavior, and predicts demand based on trends. Production takes place in smaller series, and products are available on the platform immediately after production. If there is a high demand for a particular product, Shein quickly replenishes stocks, minimizing unsold pieces while always keeping a certain stock on hand to immediately satisfy demand.
This approach allows Shein to offer low prices, quickly refresh collections, and continuously motivate customers to make repeat purchases. As a result, it has become one of the leaders in the fast fashion sector, constantly innovating to maintain its competitive edge.
Fast Fashion Giant
Shein is a prime example of what we call fast fashion today. This term refers to the fashion industry that focuses on the rapid production of clothing, copying the latest trends from world-renowned fashion designers and making them immediately available to the general public at exceptionally low prices. The customer thus receives fashion products at unbeatable prices, but at the cost of quality, ethical standards, and often the environment.
However, Shein faces criticism precisely because of the ecological and social impacts of fast fashion. High production volumes, the use of cheap materials, and a lack of transparency regarding working conditions in their supply chains are just some of the issues that raise discussions. Nevertheless, the speed and affordability of clothing attract a vast number of customers.
Aggressive Marketing
One of the main reasons for Shein's enormous success is their aggressive marketing approach. The company intensively uses social media, especially Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, where it collaborates with influencers and celebrities worldwide. This type of campaign targeting the younger generation of customers is extremely effective, as Shein constantly supports so-called haul videos and product reviews, where influencers showcase and review their purchases. This form of advertising appears authentic and can quickly generate interest and motivate young people to shop.
Another weapon in Shein's marketing arsenal is their flash sale and time-limited discounts, which create a sense of urgency and encourage consumers to shop immediately. This effective psychological pressure increases impulse purchases, especially when products are so cheap. Moreover, Shein regularly sends personalized emails and notifications with offers tailored to specific customers, maximizing the chances of purchase.
Thus, Shein demonstrates that the combination of modern technologies and aggressive marketing can change the rules of the game in the fashion industry – but the question remains, at what cost.
