Sabbatical

What does it mean

Sabbatical is a period during which an employee temporarily leaves their job to renew their creativity, gain new experiences, or pursue personal projects. After the period ends, they return to work with renewed energy. A sabbatical can be paid or unpaid, depending on the company's policy.

More info

A sabbatical is not just a time for rest, but also a strategic tool that can positively impact work performance, personal development, and overall employee satisfaction. Its main benefits are felt not only by the employees themselves but also by companies that support the long-term development of their team in this way. The main benefits of a sabbatical for both employees and employers are:

Renewal of energy and creativity: After many years of work, employees may feel exhausted. A sabbatical provides them with an opportunity to rest and rejuvenate, leading to increased productivity and creativity upon returning to work.

Acquiring new skills: During a sabbatical, employees can take courses, attend training, or work on projects that help them expand their skills and knowledge. This can contribute to their professional growth and development.

Personal development: A sabbatical allows employees to engage in personal interests and projects, which can lead to a better balance between work and personal life.

Increased loyalty: Companies that offer sabbaticals often increase the loyalty of their employees. These employees feel valued and tend to stay with the company longer.

Example of a company offering a sabbatical

Bank of America started a paid sabbatical policy in 2023, and its more than 200,000 employees are responding positively to it. By 2024, more than 5,000 employees have taken paid leave to travel, care for relatives, or simply rest.

The BoA scheme allows for four weeks of leave after 15 years of work, an additional five weeks after 20 or 25 years, and six weeks upon reaching the 30-year milestone. Employees can take two sabbatical breaks during their employment. It seems they are enthusiastically taking advantage of this option.

A sabbatical is a valuable tool that can contribute to the personal and professional development of employees. By renewing energy, acquiring new skills, and increasing employee loyalty, companies can create a culture that supports long-term growth and success.
