Amazon
What does it mean
Amazon is one of the largest and most well-known technology companies in the world. It originally started as an online bookstore, but today it is a vast ecosystem of services offering a wide range of products and technologies.
More info
Amazon is not only the largest online retailer in the world but also a significant player in areas such as cloud services (Amazon Web Services – AWS), video streaming (Amazon Prime Video), smart home devices (Amazon Echo with Alexa assistant), and many others.
In addition to e-commerce and technology, Amazon is also involved in logistics, which allows it to deliver products in record time. The Amazon Prime service, which offers fast delivery, movie and music streaming, is among its most popular programs. Amazon is constantly expanding and innovating, developing new products and services such as the cashier-less Amazon Go stores.
Brief History
Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 in the USA. It started as an online bookstore and officially launched its services on July 16, 1995. Although books were its initial product, Bezos always had bigger ambitions. From the beginning, he planned to expand the range to everything from electronics to clothing, thereby changing the way people shop.
By 1997, Amazon went public, and its popularity grew exponentially. In the following years, the company began to diversify and brought innovations in technology, distribution, and services, allowing it to quickly expand into new markets.
Amazon in Slovakia
Although Amazon does not yet have a direct e-shop for Slovak customers like in some Western European countries (such as Germany or France), Slovak consumers have access to Amazon through other European versions, especially through the German Amazon.de, which provides services in Slovak.
Amazon in Slovakia operates exclusively through its logistics center in Sereď, which was opened in 2017. This center specializes in reverse logistics, meaning it processes returned products from all over Europe. Although Amazon does not have an e-shop in Slovakia, this center plays a key role in its logistics network.
This fulfillment center receives, inspects, and processes returned orders. It handles thousands of returns daily, managing even the most complex cases. It has special equipment for quality control of returned products, their repair, or repackaging if they are suitable for resale. In addition, it collaborates with other European centers that have similar capacities for processing returns.
Amazon is a giant in online shopping and technology, constantly developing and expanding. Its presence in Slovakia represents not only employment opportunities but also technological support for local businesses.
